111 CENTRE ST, July 23 รข€“ A man who declined to be present at the 111 Centre Street trial in which he was convicted was up for sentencing on July 23. Inner City Press was there.

The defense lawyer, citing a change in sentencing law not yet implemented, asked that his client get the same eight year concurrent on a drug and a stabbing charge.

The prosecution disagreed, asking for a consecutive sentence citing a lack of remorse. The defense described the eight-year drug sentence as "ridiculously harsh."

The defendant spoke up for himself, saying that the jury never saw him before convicting him.

That was your choice, Justice Robert M. Rosenthal said. The only day you offered to come, you flushed your pants down the toilet and said you'd come in your underwear.

"Would you like to hear why?" the defendant asked.    No, Justice Rosenthal said. I would have liked to hear it then. Not now.

"You don't care," the defendant said.     Justice Rosenthal said he didn't like having to make decisions about so much of a person's life on the fly. He set sentencing over for August 27.

Four stories down, a defendant charged with attempted murder watched as a detective narrated the video of a person, perhaps the defendant, shooting a gun near Lenox Avenue and 127th Street. That trial continues. For the first defendant, there is only the sentencing, long or longer.
