Amid Syria War, UNCA Led by CBS, Reuters & AFP Start 2d Counterfeit @InnerCityPress

UNITED NATIONS, September 7 -- The war in Syria has a smaller, sickening echo into the UN in New York: the insiderjournalists who held a murky "UN briefing" with Saudi supported rebel boss Jarba are now stealthy trying to undermine critical media.

  During the week, a long-time UN Correspondents Association bigwig cut off a question about rebels using chemical weapons, and then demanded the UN spokesperson say what media the questioner worked for.

  Now this weekend, a seemingly larger team from UNCA is counterfeiting @InnerCityPress, one of two Twitterati 100 covering the UN named by Foreign Policy magazine. The UNCA insiders, many of whom merely re-tweet their corporate media's output or fawning selfie photographs with those in power, want to undermine the investigative Press.

So far with the counterfeit account they established on September 5, right after InnerCityPress.com analyzed how CBS, Reuters and Gulf media were the only ones allowed to ask questions of US Ambassador Samantha Power, they have reached out to make 900 follows.

  They get some follow-backs -- 38 so far -- one of whom later told Inner City Press, I thought you guys were starting a new account so I followed.

  That person and others then unfollowed. But the UNCA insiders have started a second counterfeit account. This one, because Inner City Press questions and continues to question the US' public evidence on chemical weapons, and why it did not commit at least to wait for the UN report, draws a link between Inner City Press and Syria's Assad -- anonymously, of course.

To be an anonymous part of an anonymous crowd making such attacks: this is the UNCA board.

  It is derivative and parasitic: they follow those who have chosen to follow @InnerCityPress or @FUNCA_info, theFree UN Coalition for Access which Inner City Press co-founded after quitting UNCA, seeing as they try to get journalists thrown out of the UN, and in the case of Reuters' bureau chief Lou Charbonneau, spy for the UN through UN accreditation official Stephane Dujarric.   Charbonneau told Dujarric that if he didn't thrown Inner City Press out of the UN, Charbonneau -- the go to guy for pro-Western spin -- might leave the UN. Now the UNCA-linked counterfeit account follows Dujarric.

  AFP's Witcher complained to UN Security, leading with the way Inner City Press asked a question to UN Peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous, who previously served on one of AFP's management boards.

  Now they follow and try to confusion countries' Mission to the UN, many of whom already follow the real@InnerCityPress. This was raised to the top of the UN Department of Public Information, when in February 2013 UNCA already had a half dozen of these anti-Press anonymous troll social media accounts, but it has continued. 

 One observer called these UNCA Executive Committee members, not without irony, "Ban's shabiha." Or more generously, "Lapdogs with laptops."

  And DPI had threatened the suspend or withdraw Inner City Press' accreditation for hanging the sign of the Free UN Coalition for Access on the door of its shared office, while UNCA has five signs.

  The reality is, after some in the UN tried to get Inner City Press thrown out, after that these UNCA scribes took up the cause: Voice of America, Reuters through Charbonneau and now Michelle Nichols who works under him, Agence France Presse's Tim Witcher, and

Bloomberg, part of those trying to get Inner City Press thrown out until after this was raised to Matthew Winkler and the correspondents was told to stay away from the campaign - at least visibly.

But there are more, linked to these counterfeit Twitter accounts:

Pamela Falk of CBS, figurehead 2013 UNCA president, who send sycophantic tweets at the Ambassadors of the US and UK, who are now followed by the/her UNCA counterfeit account;

Margaret Besheer of Voice of America, who tried to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN; and the Freedom of Information Act inquiries just keep revealing more.

At UN Amid Syria, Gulf & Western Media UNCA Starts Counterfeit of ICP, and Ban Ki-moon's UN Cheers Them On, Joins In

UNITED NATIONS, September 6 -- The same group of insider wire services and Gulf media which tried to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN, unsuccessfully so far, have this week set up counterfeit Inner City Press social media accounts and troll-followed UN Missions, agencies and people who follow the Free UN Coalition for Access,@FUNCA_info.

  This comes less than a month after @InnerCityPress was named one of two "Twitterati" for UN coverage by Foreign Policy magazine (the only one based at the UN), and after InnerCityPress.com reported on the propagandistic distribution of questions at the missile-justifying stakeout by US Ambassador Samantha Power on September 5, here.

The goal seems to be to now create confusion about which is the real @InnerCityPress account. It is not hard:@InnerCityPress has 6,725 followers and UNCA-linked counterfeit for now less than 25, while mass-following over 800. It's a nasty piece of business. 

  Still, a communications chief of an NGO targeted by the UNCA trolls was fooled, and snarked about the account. Other FUNCA followers, when targeted, automatically followed back the counterfeit account.

It's a new low for this gang of scribes, who hide behind anonymous accounts since they work for big media companies like Reuters and Agence France Presse.

The UN bureau chiefs of these two companies, Louis Charbonneau and Tim Witcher respectively, both tried to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN, as documented by e-mails obtained from US government agency Voice of America under the Freedom of Information Act.

    (VOA's Broadcast Board of Governors, on which Secretary of State John Kerry serves, has started stonewalling on the follow-up request, so an appeal is being filed this week.)

   Click here for VOA's request that Inner City Press' UN accreditation be "reviewed," saying it had the support of Reuters, AFP and Bloomberg (which after a letter to Matthew Winkler purported to drop out of the campaign.)

Reuters' Charbonneau as first vice president of the UN Correspondents Association, it is documented, passed an internal anti-Press UNCA document to UN accreditation official Stephane Dujarric three minutes after promising not to do so. Story here, audio here, document here.

  Once the Voice of America led push was exposed, Dujarric begrudgingly extended Inner City Press' accreditation, while providing pointers on how to cover Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his head of peacekeeping Herve Ladsous. 

  Inner City Press quit the UNCA Executive Committee, to which it had been elected, and co-founded the Free UN Coalition for Access to actually protect journalists. (Here is a sample project by a FUNCA member in Somaliland, here.)

  Only this week, at a UN noon briefing, an UNCA insider tried to cut off the question of a FUNCA member reporting for Pacifica Radio's WBAI who asked about chemical weapons use by rebels in Syria. Click here for that.

In setting up the counterfeit social media account, the UNCA insiders stole the work of FUNCA's co-founder. UNCA long ago stopped defending journalists - it tries to get some thrown out of the UN, or to steal or destroy the work of others. 

  And the UN, informed of UNCA's trolling back in February -- here is on the record audio of UNCA's 2013 president Pamela Falk, ultimately responsible for all this -- has done nothing. 

  In fact, the UN's Department of Public Information has threatened to suspend or withdraw Inner City Press' UN accreditation for hanging a sign of the Free UN Coalition for Access on the door of its shared office, while UNCA has five signs.

  It's like being in a game in which the referee not only permits one side to sleazily (anonymously) attack the other, but even joins in gleefully in the attack. Apparently it's the law of the jungle.

After ICP Asks If Ban to Meet Pope, UN Squawks Answer to Scribes, No E-mail

UNITED NATIONS, April 5 -- Here's a small example of how the UN works, or doesn't. 

 At Friday's noon briefing, Inner City Press asked Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's lead spokesman Martin Nesirky, piped into the briefing from Madrid, to confirm that Ban will meet Pope Francis in Rome on April 9. Video here, from Minute 5:40.

  Nesirky refused to answer, saying when they have an announcement they'll make it, that's how it's done.

It seemed strange, since the Vatican had already announced that Ban would go. 

  Inner City Press immediately wrote the story, after Nesirky's deputy Eduardo Del Buey refused questions on Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo, then headed to the UN's North Lawn building to cover more fall out from the Staff Union's vote of “no confidence” in Ban.

  Ban's spokesperson's office sent no e-mail answer, nothing. But then a flurry of tweets from UN correspondents who weren't at the noon briefing, “reporting” that the UN says Ban will go to Rome.

  How can the UN answer the question it declined at noon, while not providing the information to the journalist who asked the question?

  Well, Ban's spokesperson's office has a “squawk” system where they pipe in audio to correspondents sitting in their cubicles. They get answers, in this case, to others' questions, while the questioner, not in the cubicle that the UN raided on March 18, does not get the answer.

  This is an institutionalized version of what Ban's UN Peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous does -- refuse questions from Inner City Press for weeks about the rapes in Minova, for example, then hand half-answers to the scribes. Rather than standing up to Ladsous, the UN has sunk to his level.

  While the UN conducted its March 18 raid, Pamela Falk of CBS, the president of the UN Correspondents Association -- now known as the UN's Censorship Alliance -- ghoulishly took photographs. Later she sent a legal threat from her CBSNews.com e-mail address to Inner City Press, to not ask or write about it.

  She was not among the tweeters of the spoon- (or squawk) fed news. But “first” was Voice of America, which tried in 2012 to get the UN to “review the accreditation” of Inner City Press.

  Then there was Louis Charbonneau of Reuters; documents obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act from VOA say Reuters supported the request.

  Then there was Denis Fitzgerald of Saudi Press Agency, who volunteered to “judge” Inner City Press in 2012, and is now on the Executive Committee of the UN Censorship Alliance. And so it goes at the UN. Watch this site.

Targeting Press, UNCA Stokes Sri Lanka Extremists Now as in 2012, Its Turtle Slow and Exposed

UNITED NATIONS, March 30 -- In 2012 Inner City Press received death threats from extremist supporters of Sri Lanka's Rajapaksa government, triggered by a United Nations Correspondents Association proceeding against it that was likened to a kangaroo court.

The UNCA president at the time threatened to sue Inner City Press for reporting on it, so see this summary from the UK based Sri Lanka Campaign.

As detailed below, still now in 2013, UNCA is playing to the same audience. After UNCA's “new” president Pamela Falk of CBS took photographs while Inner City Press' office was raided by the UN on March 18, trolls not only from UNCA but from Sri Lanka have re-emerged: anonymous as always.

After the UN raid, which not only Falk but apparently other UNCA “leaders” photographed, a BuzzFeed article of March 22 contained photos that the UN will not explain. The UN's Stephane Dujarric has said the photos are not “ours,” leaving it unclear if this means only the UN Department of Public Information or other DPI allowed in on March 18.

Among the anonymous commenters on the BuzzFeed article, beyond some obviously with UNCA, there are at least two with a Sri Lanka focus.

There is a “David Knutsen,” which makes allegations echoing those of Margaret Besheer of Voice of America about long ago college attendance. But this David Knutsen has commented elsewhere twice trying to link Inner City Press to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, merely because it reported on war crimes in Sri Lanka.

Where did Knutsen make these comments? On the “Turtle Bay” blog, which tellingly never reported on the March 18 raid on a journalist's office in the UN, nor for example on UN Peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous openly refusing questions from Inner City Press in May and October 2012 press conferences, stakeouts on November 27, December 7 and December 18, and now on March 24. Turtles are slow, apparently.

There, Knutsen linked to a blog about the International Monetary Fund reporting of Inner City Press, with a comment from one “Arash,” that “Matthew Russell Lee is [a MF] who deserves to be tried for being a sponsor of terror.”

On the same blog, an “Al Paul” opines the Inner City Press “deserves to be invesitgated [sic] and brought to justice in Sri Lankan courts for supporting terrorists.”

And now, on BuzzFeed, an “ArashPaul” rants that “I just checked out some of his blogs and his incessant attack on the UN spreading cholera in Haiti... We hear of some illegal outfits funding his one man crusade to damage people's reputation.”

Apparently those source are dead people in Haiti. But this is who UNCA was playing to in 2012, and is playing to now. 

  In 2012, when Inner City Press got death threats, UNCA vice president Sylviane Zehil said, "I have nothing to do with this." Denis Fitzgerald of Saudi Press Agency demanded, who funds you? Louis Charbonneau of Reuters smirked and said, "Tell NYPD." This is UNCA. Watch this site.

As Arms Trade Treaty Failed, New Low by UN Cowardice Association UNCA

UNITED NATIONS, March 29 -- While diplomats milled around UN Conference Room 1 waiting to learn how theirlack of consensus on the Arms Trade Treaty would be phrased, what were the leaders of the UN Cowardice Association up to?

  Using their anonymous social media accounts to try to claim a victory for their role in the UN's raid of Inner City Press' office on March 18, at which UNCA president Pamela Falk of CBS took photographs. 

  Then anonymous UNCA leader “Concerned UN Reporter” passed photographs including of Inner City Press' bookshelf to BuzzFeed. This is UNCA: the UN's Censorship Alliance.

  Their new anonymous social media accounts are associated with most members of the UNCA Executive Committee: Louis Charbonneau of Reuters, Tim Witcher of Agence France Press, Melissa Kent of CBC, Syliane Zehil of L'Oriente Le Jour, even Barbara Plett of the BBC and others pictured below.

  There's also former Executive Committee member Margaret Besheer of Voice of America, and former former Evelyn Leopold. But absentee president Falk, after screaming on February 22 that she didn't know which of her board members were behind the accounts, has done nothing to find out. Is she resigning?

  Falk has only issued a legal threat to Inner City Press, from her CBSNews.com e-mail account, not to question why she took photos of the March 18 raid by the UN Department of Public Information.

  DPI is aware of the fake social media accounts and claimed to take them seriously. DPI's Stephane Dujarric is followed by a recently created one. But so what? Watch this site.

Week After UN Raid of Press Office, Anonymous Cheers from UN Cowardice Association, UNCA

UNITED NATIONS, March 26 -- Eight days ago the UN raided Inner City Press' office; the president of the UN Correspondents Association Pamela Falk of CBS News took photographs.

  Now the two are blaming each other for being a party to the anonymous and totally improper transfer to BuzzFeed of photos taken inside the Press office during the raid, photos of the stacks of documents that at least the UN personnel were searching.

  Belatedly on March 25 the UN's Stephane Dujarric admitted to Inner City Press that “we recognize that you should have been called before entering your part of the shared office.”

  Since the desk photograph was taken from the Inner City Press part of the office, without Inner City Press present or even notified, the logical corollary of the admission is the need to disclose which individuals were brought or allowed into that position by the UN, which took photographs, and what they did with them.

  The response of Pam Falk of CBS and UNCA has been to make a legal threat to Inner City Press about even questioning her role. So what of the rest of UNCA, or of the other members of its Executive Committee?

  There is a reason, beyond anonymous social media accountsand comments, that UNCA is now becoming known as the UN Cowardice Association. What kind of media organization says nothing -- cheers and takes pictures actually -- when a journalist's office is raided and searched without notice or consent? This kind:

  FUNCA has proposed, or is demanding, these two (additional) changes to the Media Access Guidelines which UNCA agreed to with the UN, and which provide no due process or other protections:

"Even if the UN determines that it must enter an accredited correspondent's office under what it seemed to be an emergency, the UN must immediately notify the correspondent and allow them access to witness the entry and what is done inside.

"Even if for some reason the UN determines to take photographs inside the journalist's office, it is prohibited for the UN to share the photographs with UN personnel without a strictly interpreted 'need to know,' and it is strictly prohibited for the UN to share the photographs with any non-UN person."

  UNCA, at least its Executive Committee, have done nothing. Apparently they like having no rules, or would like to have a rule which would allow them to throw out of the UN anyone they (don't) like. But anonymously, of course! That's why it's the UN Cowardice Association. Watch this site.

Here's from the UN's transcript of its March 25 noon briefing:

Inner City Press: Last Monday, 18 March, the UN entered my office, they said it was full of trash, they didn’t call me — fine. They took photographs, and it is my understanding that they gave the photographs to other journalists here who they know have sought my exclusion and expulsion from the UN, and that these photographs then in turn appeared on the BuzzFeed website on Friday. So I wanted to know very clearly, putting aside for a moment whether when they enter a journalist’s office, they should provide at least notice to the journalist, by what possible right will the UN distribute photographs to non-UN persons?

Spokesperson Martin Nesirky: I think you have had an answer from Stéphane Dujarric on this.

Inner City Press: He said only that the UN did not provide them to BuzzFeed and Pam Falk of UNCA [United Nations Correspondents Association] has denied that she provided them, although she was allowed to take photographs. So it is clear they are UN photographs. And I know for a fact that DPI [Department of Public Information] showed the photographs to other journalists here. So, the Stéphane answer doesn’t cut it. All it says is that they didn’t give it. So there is a middle man. But the question is, what is the right of UN journalists not to have their own office entered without their consent, photographed and by what reason and for what purpose will the UN give photographs to another person?

Spokesperson Nesirky: Well, as I say, I think — evidently not to your satisfaction — but Stéphane Dujarric has replied, and I don’t have anything further to say on the matter.

On Sri Lanka, Press Was Put at Risk by UNCA, Al Jazeera, AFP & Saudi Press Agency, Happy to See UN Raid: Now CYA

UNdisclosed Location, March 20 -- Nine months after scribes in the UN Correspondents Association went afterInner City Press for its reporting on Sri Lanka, subjecting it to death threats from extremist supporters of the Rajapaksa government, now several of them have belatedly taken an interest in the war crimes they did not cover in 2009. 

  Close observers call it guilt or more precisely, C.Y.A -- Cover Your Arse.

  Al Jazeera's Marcelle Hopkins, for example, was shown pro government media stories in June 2012 saying that the UNCA proceeding she pushed forward could put Inner City Press out of the UN and in jail -- an extremist called to wish jail rape on Inner City Press.

Al Jazeera's Hopkins response was to say she was “offended” that Inner City Press would blame the UNCA proceeding -- cited in the Sri Lanka media accounts -- for the threats. Audio here.

 It was a bogus response then, and is a bogus response now. Ironically, Hopkins had purported to offer praise for Inner City Press' reporting on Sri Lanka - but then would obviously have been happy to see it stop.th

On March 18, Hopkins walked right on by as the UN raided Inner City Press' office and conducted a non-consensual search of its papers.

  But, hey, Hopkins is tweeting about the Sri Lanka resolution at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. 

  So is Denis Fitzgerald of the Saudi Press agency, in 2012 just a judge of Inner City Press, now as if as a reward an UNCA Executive Committee member. Despite being told of the dangers of raising spurious claims of funding by the Tamil Tigers, Fitzgerald did just that in 2012, demanding for example, "who funds you?" Audio here.

  Now, he too is tweeting about Sri Lanka, and claiming to have no role in what the UNCA Executive Committee he sits on does. UNCA President Pamela Falk on March 18 took photographs of the UN's raid on Inner City Press' office. Any explanation?

  Tim Witcher, now as then an UNCA Executive Committee member, does not tweet about Sri Lanka. He hardly tweets at all - the last, in early March, was to try to promote the equally spoonfed story of Michelle Nichols of Reuters based on a briefing by Witcher's main source Herve Ladsous, answering a question Inner City Press had put to Ladsous and Ban Ki-moon.

After UNCA's Witcher cut into Inner City Press' conversation with another journalist on March 8 to hiss “lies and distortion” and Inner City Press replied, “lapdog,” Witcher and Reuters' correspondent filed intentionally false complaints with UN Security, to provide fodder to the UN to throw Inner City Press out. This is UNCA.

   On March 20 Witcher re-emerged, again with a French focus: Central African Republic and the need to blame Assad for chemical weapons use in Syria, even if by rebels. This is UNCA: cynical, blind and unresponsive. Watch this site.

Behind UN Raid on Press Office Are UN Censorship Alliance Leaders, Named Here

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 -- Behind the UN raid on Inner City Press' office on Monday (photo, video), beyond the UN officials who entered, search and photographed the Press office without any notice or consent are those who created the atmosphere: the UN's Censorship Alliance, which continues to call itself the UN Correspondents Association.

  Freedom of Information Act documents obtained from Voice of America show that it was UNCA that “met with UN officials (very quietly)” in 2012 to try to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN. Louis Charbonneau of Reuters, then and now UNCA's First Vice President, has refused to state his role in this meetings (audio here), as has UN official Stephane Dujarric.

Dujarric, two days before the raid by his Media Accreditation unit, dismissed Inner City Press' renewed request for due process rules and protections.

But who leads this UN Censorship Alliance, whose president Pamela Falk of CBS took photographs of the raid on Inner City Press' office?

On the Executive Committee of the UN's Censorship Alliance are:

Masood Haider of Pakistan's Daily Dawn, who voted repeatedly in 2012 to get Inner City Press thrown out;

Tim Witcher of Agence France Presse, who asked UNCA to act against Inner City Press about an article it publishedabout Herve Ladsous, the fourth Frenchman in a row to head UN Peacekeeping, then supported Voice of America's exposed request to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN, then filed his own false complaint about a March 8 verbal encounter which he initiated by cutting into a conversation to hiss about “lies and distortions;”

Denis Fitzgerald of Saudi Press Agency, who in connection with false allegations that Inner City Press must be funded by the terrorist Tamil Tigers because it asked questions about Sri Lanka, browbeat Inner City Press and offered to serve on a panel to judge it;

Barbara Plett of BBC, who voted to expel the press, asking Inner City Press why it had published a photograph of the French Ambassador, and why it reported that UNCA's president had rented one of his apartment to Sri Lanka's ambassador, when he was a UN official, before UNCA without asking the opinion of the whole board screened Sri Lanka's war crimes denial film in the UN;

Bouchra Benyoussef of Maghreb Arab Press, who voted against Inner City Press every time and, once seeing Inner City Press rushing to try to ask a question of a Moroccan official at a UN stakeout, gestured that the microphone should be turned off, the stakeout ended;

Zhenqiu Gu of Xinhua, who voted every time against Inner City Press, told Inner City Press that it did not respect authority enough and placed his Xinhua underling Bill Reilly as the chair of the panel to judge Inner City Press, despite conflict of interest;

Ali Barada of An-Nahar, who filed his own false complaint against Inner City Press (deemed even by UN authorities to be “bogus”) and served on panel to judge Inner City Press but refused to respond to legal requests to see “evidence” alluded to;

Kahraman Halicelik of Turkish Radio & TV who claimed he would drop off the board if UNCA tried to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN-- then when that was proved, under FOIA, didn't leave, and remains on the board;

Louis Charbonneau of Reuters, who filed a stealth complaint in 2012, had Reuters support Voice of America's move to thrown Inner City Press out of the UN (according to VOA documents), and on February 22 told Inner City Press, “the fundamental problem is your website” (his colleague Michelle Nichols joined in Witcher of AFP's false February 22 complaint); and

Pamela Falk of CBS, who screamed at Inner City Press on February 22 “mugger” and “you call yourself a journalist” and “just don't write about me,” before taking pictures of the raid on Inner City Press' office on March 19. UN Censorship Alliance indeed. Watch this site.
