Man Arrested for Laundering Gold for Elder Abuse Financial Scam Indicted and Detained

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 20 รข€“  A man presented in SDNY Magistrates Court in May on a money laundering complaint linked to elder abuse financial fraud has been detained ever since.

On October 20 he appeared again in the SDNY Mag Court, which Inner City Press closely covers, this time to be arraigned and to seek release on bail. The former happened; the latter was denied.

The original complaint has a photo of a table full of gold bars, and describes the scheme as one in which elderly victims were told their financial accounts had been hacked or that they owned money.

They were told to buy gold and deliver it to fake federal agents.

The defendant is described as laundering the fraud proceeds, as detailed by a Guajarati translator who read his cell phone's messages.

The case is USA v. Patel, 1:26-cr-490 (Schofield / Parker)
