CHINATOWN NYC, Sept 12 â Saturday
night on Market Street in Manhattan's Chinatown has
increasing featured hipsters and tourists in the bars on
the corner of Madison Street, one long block from NYCHA's
Smith housing projects.
September 12 had a new headliner: a
tall and ancient tree, collapsed from the Parks Department
playground next to the spacious Chinese supermarket where
eels swim cramped in fish tanks, blocking the street up to
the steps of the church across the way.
Three NYPD officers stood on the
corner, having roped off the street with yellow tape.
People seemingly headed to the bars on Madison -
were they influencers or did they want to be such? - took
out their phones to document the crime scene. A young man
squiring two women toward the bars leaned back to go under
the fallen tree, saying "Limbo!"
There is also a Vietnamese
restaurant, surprisingly expensive, newly on the block.
Further down is a well-lit art building. On the Saturday
night the Knicks won the NBA finals, seeming bar goers -
they came for the cocktails and stayed for the overprice
railroad flats - poured out onto Madison Street, eager to
join the celebration, fearing to miss out.
Inner City Press was on the scene,
then and now, as part of its Downtown News Service. But
the flash on its cell phone did not work. So its
documentation is only partial.
