On Sri Lanka UN Guterres Used FP To Lie While Banning Press Now Called Out From Colombo

By Matthew Russell Lee, video
UN GATE, Sept 26 -- After covering the UN's failure on Sri Lanka, from the bloodbath on the beach through accepting Shavendra Silva as a UN Peacekeeping adviser, Inner City Press was roughed up and banned by Secretary General Antonio Guterres. FP said nothing.
In February 2019 when Silva became Army Chief of Staff, Inner City Press puts in among its written questions to Spokesman Stephane Dujarric a question on this. Despite Dujarric's on camera promise to answer Inner City Press' written questions, no answer.
In August when Silva was further promoted, Inner City Press asked again and again in writing, including to Guterres new chief of "Global Communications" Melissa Fleming. No answer; Fleming banned Inner City Press from the UNGA week.
Now Dujarric's office has handed a claim, quite possibly not true, to his teacher's pet FP, long time correspondent Colum Lynch and DC-based Robbie Gramer. Neither ever wrote a word about Guterres using UN Security to physically rough up Inner City Press and ban it 450 days since. They call this a scoop, when it is just spoon feeding for those who want to feel good about the UN.
On the morning of September 26, while simultaneous covering the SDNY Federal court where CEFC China Energy, financially linked to UNSG Guterres was convicted of UN bribery, Inner City Press asked Guterres, his spokesmen Stephane Dujarric and Farhan Haq and Melissa Fleming questions including "September 26-2: On Sri Lanka, please immediately explain why your Office refused to answer weeks of questions from Inner City Press about the impact of Shavendra Silva being made head of army (despite Dujarric on camera promise, and Smale's written promise, to answer ICP's questions) then handed the answer to FP and how that doesn't make FP the UN's teacher's pet? Is the belated decision even true?"
No answer. Now this: "What is known about the suspension suggests currently deployed Sri Lankan peacekeeping units will remain in place until their tour ends but then be replaced by soldiers from another country. However, the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations appears to be adding a proviso that it might override the suspension if it exposed UN operations to serious operational risk.   “We will be looking for more clarity from the United Nations on what this means; the reputational risk to the Department of Peacekeeping Operations would be enormous if it tries to fudge this important human rights issue.  If you are going to talk about a ‘zero tolerance policy’ it has to be zero and it has to be done with conviction,” said ITJP’s Executive Director, Yasmin Sooka."
So it might not even be true, as the government in Colombo is bragging. The UN is corrupt and censoring joke with its own sold-out chorus under Guterres. And what about the other compliant media that reported the UN's pseudo heroic lie? More on this to come.
The United Nations under Antonio Guterres is so corrupt that it not only accepts "peacekeepers" from the Sri Lanka army run by war criminal Shavendra Silva - it's had as as official of UN Security run by Gilles Michaud a man links to earlier crimes in Sri Lanka where Tamils were killed in the Madhu church: Parkrama Sriwardana. This while Guterres bloviates about protecting houses of worship. He is a hypocrite and a censor of the Press which asks him questions, including this one.
Guterres' head of UN Security in Jordan is a man who conducted assassinations, perhaps even of Rafic Hariri, for Michel Aoun of Lebanon.
The UN Security official's name is Antoine Abi Samra; he was a military officer under Aoun. He has been promoted and protected by one Igor Mitrokhin in the UN Department of Safety and Security, ostensibly run by Gilles Michaud. It is an outrage.
Inner City Press first asked Guterres and his spokesman Stephane Dujarric about Mitrokhin in connection with South Sudan, based on complaints it received from whistleblowers in the UN mission there, UNMISS.
With Dujarric and Guterres and his head of communications Melissa Fleming refusing to answer banned Inner City Press' written question, it nevertheless asked then reported why "Igor Mitrokhin of UNDSS from Russia is pushing David Shearer, SRSG of UNMISS and Principal Security Advisor, Graeme to take Nikolay Kovalev of Russia at all cost disregarding all rules."
Now as the first in a series about the decay and corruption of UN Security under Guterres and Michaud Inner City Press is today reporting that this same Mitrokhin as one of the many war criminals he has promoted in the UN got Abi Samra the job in Jordan.
Not only does this constitute Guterres' UN ghoulish providing safe haven for war criminals, as it has also done regarding Sri Lanka and Cameroon - in Jordan, Abi Samra using public money to pay a DSS employee to do nothing more than tutor his own son.
Sources working in Lebanon link "Tony" Abi Samra to the assassination of Rafic Harriri and more, and ask Inner City Press how the UN didn't even check its own records. These is the corruption of Guterres, who bans the Press which asks. We'll have more on this.
Past 4 pm on Friday, August 30 the UN issued a denial of accreditation with no reasoning other than that accreditation had previously been revoked:
"From:  malu at un dot org
Date: Fri, Aug 30, 2019 at 4:23 PM
Subject: U.N. eAccreditation request for Matthew Lee Ref # M5413398 has been declined
To: Inner City Press:
Greetings Matthew Lee from Inner City Press,  Your media accreditation request, with reference no: M5413398, has been declined for the following reason: Media accreditation was withdrawn on 17 August 2018."

This is Kafka-esque, and corrupt. We will have more, much more, on this.

In UN's Somalia Scam, Weeks After ICP Asked, Ladsous Admits UNMAS David Bax' DNA Sharing with US -- to Friendly Scribe

By Matthew Russell Lee

"a detailed complaint from an UNMAS whistleblower in Somalia that the head of UNMAS in Somalia provided genetic information from bombings to [United States] intelligence agencies and also moves around Mogadishu with armed guards from that group, Denel, that we were talking about.I also e-mailed several of them and asked for a comment; I haven’t received anything."
Answer: Well, we’ll have to check on that for you, Matthew, we’ll check with DPKO [Department of Peacekeeping Operations].

In the weeks that followed, Inner City Press put the question to UN envoy to Somalia Nicholas Kay -- who referred the question back "to New York" and to Ban's spokesperson Martin Nesirky.

Inner City Press got more information and published it. But no response from Ladsous or his lead spokesperson Kieran Dwyer, nor from Ban's spokesperson Martin Nesirky.

After the Free UN Coalition for Access raised the question, the UN on June 26 told Inner City Press:
Subject: Your questions on Somalia. From: UN Spokesperson - Do Not Reply [at] un.orgDate: Wed, Jun 26, 2013 at 9:43 AMTo: Matthew Russell Lee [at] innercitypress.com
The Department of Peacekeeping Operations does not discuss internal communications or emails received with media correspondents.
Now Dwyer has provided an answer -- to Colum Lynch of "Turtle Bay," Foreign Policy and the for-now Jeff Bezos / Amazon owned Washington Post. (Is he not a "media correspondent?) This without any notice to Inner City Press, either by DPKO or Ban's Spokesperson's office.

Dwyer claimed, on camera, that he and his office do answer Inner City Press questions. Video here. Dwyer acknowledged that Ladsous refuses to answer Inner City Press questions (apparently in response to Inner City Press asking him about his public and leaked statements as France's Deputy Permanent Representative at the UN during the Rwanda genocide, arguing for the escape of genocidaires into Eastern Congo, or Inner City Press' coverage of Ladsous' drones).

But this is false. Inner City Press asked this question on June 24, in public, transcript here. And Ban's Spokesperson's office said they would ask DPKO. Then, weeks later, DPKO gave a canned answer to Colum Lynch.
This has happened before. As simply one example, Inner City Press pursued the murder of a UN Security officer in Afghanistan, Louis Maxwell, in a series of either stories, quoting his relatives that the UN was engaged in a cover up
Then the UN decided to respond to the scandal, not by answering Inner City Press' question, but by calling up their go-to Turtle.
Later, Lynch commiserated with Louis Charbonneau of Reuters, how unfair Inner City Press was. Charbonneau would go on, at least three times now, to try to get Inner City Press thrown out of the UN -- including by leaking internal anti-Press UNCA document to the UN's top accreditation official three minutes after promising not to do so. Story hereaudio here, document here.
Inner City Press exposed this, with documents obtained under FOIA fromVoice of America. It was covered by, among others, the Guardian UK -- but not by Lynch. He explains:
"Why haven’t I written about your disputes with UNCA and the UN administration, of which there have been many. I have thought about weighing in on it. But given the complexities of your relationship with UNCA and the administration I’ve resisted the temptation of writing a hasty story. I simply have not been able to justify the commitment in labor – which in my view would require a major investment of reporting time, including reviews of thousands of your blog posts—to writing a lengthier piece. There are a lot of more impactful stories I don’t write because I can’t devote the time to it."
So Lynch never reported for example that the head of UN Peacekeeping openly refuses to answer Inner City Press questions. He benefits from this.

We have more to say about all this -- including a rebuttal of the attempt to rehabilitate Bax. For example:

It's reported that "Bax established a relationship with the FBI to provide the Somalis with expertise on maintaining the integrity of the chain of evidence when handling bomb material" and then that "a senior official at U.N. headquarters insisted that the United Nations does not directly share evidence with the United States or other governments." This must be explained - in public.

The rehabilitation of Bax's corrupt running of the camp is laughable. Source: "he put everyone lives at direct risk for that."

On all levels, this is unacceptable. Watch this site - and this video

As US Joins UN Rights Council, Washington Post Mulls Closing UN Bureau

Byline: Matthew Russell Lee of Inner City Press at UN
www.innercitypress.com/unhrc1wapo051209.html

UNITED NATIONS, May 12, updated -- Amid the modulated hoopla Tuesday morning surrounding the election of the United States to the UN Human Rights Council, Inner City Press learned of an opposite trend of pull-back from the UN by American, or at least American-based media. The venerable Washington Post is moving to close its UN bureau, by the end of 2009 at latest, sources said. Post correspondent Colum Lynch, who has broken stories about abuse by peacekeepers and procurement corruption, will no longer daily be covering the UN "from inside."

While the financial crisis, globally and of newspapers, is sure to be presented as the rationale, others wonder if the drop-off in charisma and flash in the transition from Kofi Annan to Ban Ki-moon does not also play a factor. CNN, for example, no longer opens its UN office every day. Correspondent Richard Roth, after man in the street interviews about the global financial crisis and some spring baseball stories, is said to be trying to get the Human Rights Council story a spot in the network's Situation Room. The World Body, some says, just doesn't rate anymore.

Another network correspondent mused, of the Washington Post's plans, that the work space in the UN is free: why would they be closing? Ban Ki-moon's head of management Angela Kane has floated and conflicted a draft proposal to charge rent to the press in the future. With major media pulling back from the UN, some wonder why the UN would try to make it more difficult to cover the organization and its work.

While we report further on this story, for now we wish to note Lynch's unassuming but fact-uncovering style, both at the Security Council stakeout and in the UN briefing room... Lynch has not settled for political correctness, has not left facts unreported. Hence this interim piece.

Footnote 1: Seemingly connecting these two competing trends, Lynch was Tuesday morning at the stakeout in front of the General Assembly vote asking US Ambassador Susan Rice a question -- or seemingly trying to. As he asked three minutes into Amb. Rice's stakeout, she walked away. Apparently, he did not shout loud enough. We report, you decide: video here, from Minute 3:30.

From the mea culpa department, it has been pointed out that in an earlier version of this story, a journalist who Amb. Rice said was mumbling was identified as Lynch. (Since he was mumbling, the mis-identification occured, and was repeated at the noon briefing.) "You're mumbling," Ambassador Rice told the jounalist. Video here, from Minute 1:21.

"Mumbling? Oh my God," he said, and then continued to ask Rice to respond to charges that given the membership of human rights abuses, the Council cannot be effective. We do not agree, Rice said, and then seemed to refuse Lynch's question: video here, from Minute 3:30.

Footnote 2: Craig Mokhiber also said, of the UN in Sri Lanka, where interment camps alleged to be site of sexual abuse by soldiers and even of starvation are funded by the UN, that the UN must itself abide by international law. We'll see.
