EDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 17 â The
defense rested on September 17 in an EDNY criminal trial
about the violent beating and robbery of a United States
Postal Service delivery man for his Arrow master key.
Pre-trial, a major issue in
the case was seeking to suppress "tower dump" cell phone
data used to identify the defendant, Mahwanga Campbell.
The defense's final witness on Thursday described the
Manhattan DA's office work with such data. AUSA Noble said
he had no questions.
EDNY Senior District Judge Eric N.
Vitaliano told the jurors he is dealing with "other
matters" on Friday, and Monday is Yom Kippur. So they will
return Tuesday. Notably, Judge Vitaliano
told the jurors not only to avoid speaking about the case
with each other, but to not tell anyone that they have
been coming to the courthouse in Brooklyn to serve on a
jury. This seems difficult, and like a
recipe for familial problems.
He also told them not only to avoid news
about the case - it appears there has been none, prior to
this article - but to avoid viewing any content about the
law. "In the criminal justice system, the people are
represented by two separate yet equally important groups:
the police, who investigate crime, and the district
attorneys, who prosecute the offenders. These are their
stories." And these are ours.
The case is USA v. Mahwanga Campbell,
1:25-cr-218 (Vitaliano)
