COURTHOUSE,
June 24 รข A man who
pled guilty to a Bronx drug
mill with a pill press and
more than 50 grams of meth was
up for sentencing on June 24
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge Arun Subramanian.
Inner City Press was there. The AUSA
said the guideline was 168
months in prison. Judge
Subramanian, who quoted from
the defendant's letter, asked
why 96 months would not be
sufficient. The letter
states "My childhood in the
Bronx was defined by harsh
realities... The deportation
of my father when I was nine
years old dismantled the
foundation of our recently
immigrated family... Watching
my 13-year-old walk the exact
same Bronx sidewalks I grew up
on pushed me every day to show
him that the lines drawn
around our neighborhood do not
restrict where he can go."
Judge Subramanian sentenced
him to 96 months - eight years
- and said his son will be
glad to see him when he gets
out, that many good things can
await him. The case is USA v. Tavares-Chavier, 1:25-cr-77 (Subrananian)
