Robbery Spree that Ended in GameStop Yields 15 Years in Prison and Family Tragedy in Hall by Matthew & Russell Lee, Patreon Substack DDC COURTHOUSE, Aug 5 – A sentencing for a spree of armed robberies and carjackings in and around DC in the Spring of 2024 gave rise to a 15 year sentence on August 5. In the courtroom gallery along with Inner City Press, the defendant's mother and father were there, albeit (very) separately. Afterward, the defendant's little brother declined to speak with the father, who limped after him on crutches. They say DDC is all big-picture political cases. But this one was heartbreaking: Judge Rudolph Contreras: There is only the one request for restitution, $2,540? AUSA: We asked, that's the only. We ask for the low end of the range [135 to 168 months] on Count 1, then the seven years mandatory consecutive. Defense: We think 10 years total would be sufficient, your Honor. He is a young man. He requests Petersburg VA, Butner or Fort Dix. Judge: Also forfeiture of the three guns. Mr. Bishop, do you wish to speak? Yes Bishop: I think about the innocent bystanders. Also my little brother and my mother [A man has come in on crutches and is told he can't sit in the front row] Judge: For six months you went on a spree. It the kind of thing that made DC feel out of control. Judge Contreras: The President sent the National Guard, because of crimes like these, perpetrated on retail workers in McDonalds and GameStop. Now you'll have time to think about it. I sentence you to 15 years, and five years of supervised release after that. You have largely given up your right to appeal, but you have 2 weeks.  Adjourned Postscript: Some readers of the live tweeted thread were surprised by Judge Contreras' comments about Trump's National Guard deployment, noting that he was nominated by the 44th President.
