Ex NYPD Officer Pleads Guilty in EDNY to Impersonating ICE to Text Threats to Woman

EDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 30 – An NYPD officer pled guilty to sending text messages to a woman falsely claiming to a high regional official of ICE, raising the threat of deportation of the woman and her family.   The change of plea proceeding took place before EDNY Judge Dora L. Irizarry on September 30. Inner City Press was there.

Among her many questions, Judge Irizarry asked about the return of firearms and resigning from NYPD. Both have already taken place, defense counsel said.    Assistant US Attorney Russell Noble read into the records text messages the defendant, Atickul Islam, sent to the woman:

"ICE will come get you and your family and you will always live poor.

"Matter of fact I will make the phone call myself.

"Since I know where you guys live do not worry enjoy the stay for as long as it lasts."

Defense counsel John Arlia added that his client had quickly apologized; they knew each other.

The sentencing guideline, because employment restrictions, is zero to six months. Judge Irizarry will set the sentencing schedule in an electronic order.

The case is USA v. Islam, 25-cr-359 (Irizarry)

Inner City Press is now covering EDNY, including on September 30 filing notice of appeal of the total sealing of another criminal case - watch this site.
