by Matthew Russell Lee, Substack Book Patreon

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 27  – Luigi Mangione was presented in Federal court on December 19 on four charges, one of them death penalty eligible, for the killing of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. Inner City Press was there, covering the case toward a book.

On February 4, death penalty qualified (learned) counsel was appointed for Mangione in SDNY, endorsed letter on Patreon here

On April 1 DOJ announced it will seek the death penalty against Mangione.

In the interim, after some push back, Inner City Press published a book Luigi Mangione Lone Wolf here, audiobook here.

On April 15 the US responded to Mangione's anti-death penalty filing with a ripeness argument: "The defendant has identified no authority for the notion that it can prevent the Government from seeking capital punishment before indictment." Full filing on Patreon here

On April 17, Inner City Press vlogged in the morning to expect something - and past 5 pm the SDNY prosecutors docketed an indictment of Mangione, with "Special Findings Regarding the Murder of Brian Thompson" - here.

On April 24 the US filed "NOTICE OF INTENT TO SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY" - here.

On April 25 Inner City Press live tweeted the arraignment, including Karen Friedman Agnifilo saying the defense will move to have the Federal case go first - and that a telephone call between her and Mangione was inappropriately monitored. Thread.

On July 25, Mangione's lawyer filed for more information from the US, including about its claims as to the victim: "the death penalty Notice says only that the government will prove the “injury, harm, and loss caused” by Luigi Mangione to “the family, friends and co-workers of Brian Thompson” as “evidenced by the victim’s personal characteristics and by the impact of the victim’s death upon his family, friends and co-workers.”The Notice is silent on what characteristics of Mr. Thompson the Government intends to prove, which family members, friends and co-workers were impacted by his loss, and the nature of the impact suffered by each relative, friend or co-worker the Government intends to rely on." 18 page memo on Patreon here.

On July 28 the US Attorney's Office wrote in that "The Government intends to oppose the defendant’s motion and respectfully requests a period of thirty days to file its response." Filing on Patreon here.

Judge Garnett granted it: "GRANTED. The Government may file its response to Defendant's motion filed at Dkt. No. 40 by August 27, 2025."

On August 27 the US wrote in that Mangione has enough detail, for example on "Grave Risk of Death to Additional Persons... The photograph, and the originating video, show a female bystander standing only a few feet from Thompson as the defendant fired multiple shots." 20 page memo on Patreon here.

The Federal case is US v. Mangione, 1:25-cr-176 (Garnett)

Bishop Lamor Whitehead Got 9 Year Sentence Now Wants Out Citing Eric Adams Dismissal

By Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 27 -  In the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on the morning of December 19, 2022 the talk was of flashy pastor Lamor Whitehead, set to be presented in the afternoon.

Inner City Press was present, the only media in the Mag Court in the morning for three procedings. Related Mag Court live-tweeted thread (more on Patreon here) vlog here

Lamor Whitehead was found guilty by the jury on March 11, 2024, see below.

On March 25, Whitehead's counsel filed motions for acquittal, including disputing which Federal Reserve Bank was used for purposes of venue, and/or for a new trial.

On February 26, 2024 the trial started and Inner City Press live tweeted opening arguments, here

On February 27, Pauline Anderson testified and cried. Inner City Press live tweeted, here

On February 28, Rasheed Anderson was on  the stand - then after the jury left, scheduling - including witness who will introduce Eric Adams' communications - was discussed.

On February 29: "ORDER as to Lamor Whitehead. It is hereby ORDERED that the Brandon Belmonte shall testify outside the presence of the jury at 9:00 A.M. on March 5."

Inner City Press went, and saw Belmonte take the 5th to every question, including about Eric Adams.

And a guilty verdict: "Jury reached a verdict. Defendant found GUILTY on Counts 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s. PSR Ordered. Defendants sentencing submission shall be filed by 6/10/2024. The Governments sentencing submission shall be filed by 06/17/2024. The parties shall appear for a sentencing hearing on 07/01/2024 at 11:00 am"

But on May 1, 2024, Judge Schofield docketed an email she endorsed with concern, and the US Attorney's Office put in a letter alleged misuse of discovery material, asking for remand to jail.

More on Substack here
and on X for Subscribers here

Judge Schofield moved the remand hearing up to May 13. On May 6, Whitehead's counsel wrote it to say it was all protected by the First Amendment. Filing on Patreon here

On May 9, the US Attorney's Office withdrew one of its grounds to request remand - no direct threat to the Andersons - but put in more quotes from Whitehead's Instagram: "But even if the Andersons have not received threats, the defendant has certainly taken steps to create risks to them. filing on Patreon here.

Docketed on May 10, a letter dated May 9 from Whitehead to Judge Schofield to please not remand him, for the sake of his family and church. He says he didn't know he couldn't show / flash the document on YouTube, saying it was already public. Whitehead's letter on Patreon here

On May 20, Whitehead was ordered remanded to jail: "Minute Entry for proceedings held before Judge Lorna G. Schofield: Bond Revocation Hearing as to Lamor Whitehead held on 5/20/2024. Defendant present with attorneys Dawn Florio and Declan Murray. AUSAs Jessica Greenwood and Jane Kim present for the Government. Defendant remanded."

On June 3, Whitehead's lawyers wrote and and asked for a sentencing of supervised release.

The US Attorney's Office countered asking for 151 months.

On June 11, the US Attorney's Office filed the victim impact letter of Rasheed Anderson, about how his mother was defrauded out of $90,000 by Whitehead, and spent $50,000 trying to recoup it. "Almost four years have been lost."

On June 14, the business day before sentencing, Judge Schofield requested "all warrant affidavits that reference the May 5 recording in a single, text-searchable, bookmarked PDF as soon as practicable and no later than June 15, 2024" at noon. The May 5 recording, the defense says, was made and withheld by Brandon Belmonte for 19 days, and, they say, Special Agent Thomas Ford falsely claimed the FBI recorded it.

On June 17, Inner City Press thread:

Judge Schofield: Some congregants praise you, but you have engaged in fraud year after year. US asks for 151 months: your lawyers ask for time served. I don't think the guidelines are very helpful here. Significant incarceration is called for

Judge: Please rise. I sentence you to 108 months in prison, no drug testing

Defense: I'd like my client released before return to prison, Otisville requested. My client cannot afford to appeal right now, but we will file notice of appeal.

Judge: I deny bail pending appeal

On June 21 in a 32-page order Judge Schofield denied Whitehead's motion for a judgment of acquittal and a new trial, stating "Defendant argues that “[t]he only way the Jury could have [convicted] is if the Jury took Brandon Belmonte’s statements for their truth . . . .” However, a reasonable jury could find Defendant guilty of Count 2 by crediting Defendant’s own statements representing his influence with the mayor described above, without relying on the truth of Mr. Belmonte’s statements, which the jury was expressly instructed not to do." Full order on Patreon here

On August 9, Judge Schofield approved Whitehead's handwritten application for financial support to appeal in forma pauperis, in which he declared zero income or assets - surprising to some - but here it is: "MEMO ENDORSEMENT as to Lamor Whitehead (1) granting [237] MOTION for Leave to Appeal In Forma Pauperis. ENDORSEMENT: Application Granted. The Clerk of the Court is directed to terminate the letter motion at docket number 237. (Signed by Judge Lorna G. Schofield on 8/9/2024)."

But the Second Circuit denied Whitehead's appeal of the denial of bail pending appeal.

Docketed on October 28, Whitehead pro se from FCI Fairton in New Jersey requested that Judge Schofield reconsider her denial of bail pending appeal, already upheld. He'd mailed on October 23 a 51 page pro se brief.

Docketed on December 3, Whitehead's motion to amend the pre-sentencing report. He says that the report's references to violence have him classified as a violent offender, based on quotes like "No N*** I will hurt you, there's guns in my church." He asked to be reclassified as a non-violent offender.

On August 27, 2025 Whitehead's new lawyer filed a notice of appearance - then a memo of law citing the dismissal of the indictment against Eric Adams, and attaching the Danielle Sassoon letters. He is asking to get out of prison on bail. Motion on Patreon here

In EDNY, Inner City Press reported on Whitehead appearing in the Mag Court there for two defendants who robbed him of expensive watched as he preached.

On January 12, 2024, the US Attorney's Office filed a motion in limine including as "examples of trial evidence" quotes from Whitehead to Victim-2 that "I'll deal with the Mayor's Office.. But we gotta have ownership. I gotta be able to say, 'Yo, yo [nickname for the Official], I own this. This is what's goin on."

The case is US v. Whitehead, 22-cr-692 (Schofield)

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

100 CENTRE STREET, Aug 27 – In November 2023 two women were charged with assault as a hate crime for ripping a Star of David off of a 41-year-old woman on West 82nd Street after tearing down fliers about hostages taken in the October 7 attack in Israel.

UNRWA Not Immune US Told Judge for Aiding Hamas Oct 7 Attack now UN Asks Stay 2d Case

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 26 - For the UN's role in Hamas' October 7 attacks, non-US citizen plaintiffs and estates on June 24 filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, Pierre Krahenbuhl, Filippo Grandi, Leni Stenseth, Sandra Mitchel, Margot Ellis and Greta Gunnarsdottir.

The individual plaintiffs are sued for, inter alia, their "constant travel to New York" to raise and get money and "their material support of Hamas' terror infrastructure." Also cited, for jurisdiction and venue, is "over one billion dollars from UNRWA's New York bank account in Manhattan that Defendants then caused to be delivered to Gaza in cash U.S. dollars to benefit Hamas."

Inner City Press, which daily cover the SDNY court in-person and the UN from outside the gate, banned from entry by SG Antonio Guterres, asked Guterres' spokespeople Stephane Dujarric and Melissa Fleming about the lawsuit, without any response per usual.

Nor have they responded to Inner City Press' June 19, 2025 application to enter the UN to ask these questions.

On February 18, the (new) SDNY wrote in, "The Government is currently reviewing the views." Letter on Inner City Press' DocumentCloud here

On April 17 DOJ wrote in asking for one more week to finalize. Inner City Press, still banned from the UN by Antonio Guterres, tweeted it.

On April 24 the Administration wrote in that it "has since reevaluated that position, and now concludes UNRWA is not immune from this litigation. Nor are the bulk of other defendants" - 10 page filing on DocumentCloud here.

On June 27 the UN's lawyer while citing the immunity of Ruud Lubbers for sexual harassment also argued "While Halk Bankasi is irrelevant, Plaintiffs’ case is not predicated on any commercial activity by Defendants." This while Guterres and others are pitching hard for funds...  17 page UN filing on DocumentCloud here.

On July 9 a second case, noted as related, was filed by US citizens under the Anti-Terrorism Act, naming UNRWA, Lazzarini, Krahenbuhl, Grandi, Leni Steseth, Sandra Mitchell, Morgot Ellis and Greta Gunnarsdottir.

On August 26 the law firm the UN is paying with taxpayers' money wrote asking to push back its time to respond, bragging that "no proof of service has been filed with respect to Philippe Lazzarini, Pierre Krahenbuhl, Filippo Grandi, Leni Stenseth, Sandra Mitchell and Greta Gunnarsdottir" - like mobsters, hiding from service of court papers.

This is Atzili v. UNRWA, 1:25-cv-5677 (Abrams) Inner City Press has put the 215 page complaint on its DocumentCloud here

The first UNRWA case is ESTATE OF TAMAR KEDEM SIMAN TOV, BY HEIR-AT-LAW GAD KEDEM v. UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND WORKS AGENCY (UNRWA) et al., 24-cv-04765 (Torres)

LA Reid In Sexual Assault Lawsuit By Dixon Lost Summary Judgment Now Trial Jan 2026

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 26  – In 2023 Drew Dixon sued music producer L.A. Reid for sexual assault, saying it had cost her, along other things, producer points on Kanye West and John Legend.

On July 9, 2025 counsel for Reid appeared before U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Jeannette A. Vargas, asking to withdraw from the case due to Reid failing to pay. Inner City Press was there, thread:

Defense counsel says not getting paid, LA mansion can't be sold. Defense counsel: At one point Mr. Reid changed his phone number and I couldn't reach him. When we became aware of destruction of text messages, our firm paid for forensic review, Judge Caproni called us generous

Judge Vargas: Has Mr. Reid spoken to you about your motion to withdraw?  Defense counsel: He expressed displeasure. Dixon's lawyer: We deposed Mr. Johnson, the house can be sold, Mariah Carey met at his house in October 2024

Dixon's lawyer: Mr. Ried could pay from the song Good, Good with Usher.

Judge Vargas: There may be a pattern of delay tactics by Mr. Reid. But I don't want to hurt this small boutique defense firm. I am considering denying the motion to withdraw, so discovery can end. But not for trial  Judge: I will allow them to withdraw before trial. If Mr. Reid or a new counsel does not appear for the final pre-trial conference, Dixon may move for default.

On July 17, Dixon's lawyers asked for leave to file on adverse inference, writing that Defendant Reid "deleted over 200 text messages on December 14, 2024... The messages that Defendant did not delete are of a sexual nature... The text messages he deleted were likely even more explicit."

Reid's outgoing counsel, still on the case, fired back on July 18 that Dixon is "attempting to impugn Reid for recently deleting text messages with a 'female subordinate' that have nothing to do with Dixon or this case."

On August 7, Judge Vargas denied Reid's motion for summary judgment.

Docketed on August 26, a new trial date: "Jury trial adjourned to January 12, 2026 at 9:30 am in Courtroom 14C, 500 Pearl Street."

On January 10 Menendez filed a motion to dismiss, on Patreon here

On February 1, Judge Stein granted some unsealing - including of some of the material in the vault which Inner City Press requested. Order here.

Jump cut: Menendez et al were convicted; Inner City Press published a book, here.

Inner City Press live tweeted on January 29 as Daibes got eight years, Hana 97 months - and Bob Menendez 11 years, after which he told the press that "Trump was right" about political witch hunt

Early on April 10 Nadine Menendez' lawyer wrote in that the US Attorney's Office is opposing the introduction of evidence it allowed in Bob Menendez's trial, and other issues - letter on Patreon here

In the April 10 trial day, former US Attorney for the District of New Jersey Philip Sellinger testified about being recused from the Daibes case and then Bob Menendez skipping his investiture in Trenton. Thread.

On April 17 after the Government's closing Nadine's lawyer Coburn took a different approach in reasonable doubt-land, saying there was no quid pro quo with Grewal and citing and even pantomiming Uribe's small bell. Thread.

On April 21 Nadine Menendez was found guilty; sentencing was set for June 12 with her lawyer implying he will be asking for delay, presumably on health grounds.

On May 7 her lawyer wrote in asking to push sentencing to September 11, saying "I had hoped to have detailed information this week from one of these professionals, but he is out of the country and" - letter on Patreon here

On May 8, the US opposed - and appeared to support the public's, and not just the Office's, right to see the filing - on Patreon here.

On April 22 Bob Menendez wrote in asking for a ruling on his motion for bail pending appeal- filing on Patreon here.

On May 9, Judge Stein gave Bob Menendez 11 final days: "as to Robert Menendez. IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that that defendant's request to adjourn his surrender date to the Bureau of Prisons from June 6 to June 17 is granted. No further adjournments will be granted. SO ORDERED: (Signed by Judge Sidney H. Stein on 5/9/2025)."

On June 11, the Second Circuit denied, with Judge Nathan disagreeing: "ORDER of USCA (Certified Copy) as to Robert Menendez re: [753] Notice of Appeal. USCA Case Number 25-0296. Defendant-Appellant Robert Menendez moves for bail pending appeal pursuant to Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 9(b). The government opposes the motion. Upon due consideration, it is hereby ORDERED that the motion is DENIED. Judge Nathan would grant the motion. Catherine O'Hagan Wolfe, Clerk USCA for the Second Circuit, Clerk USCA. Certified: 6/11/2025."

On July 2, the US Attorney's Office docketed its 100 page opposition to Nadine Menenedez' bid for a new trial - along with a January 2025 list of possible witnesses it gave her lawyer, including the Federal Reserve's Joseph Catania.

On July 15, Judge Stein docketed his denial of Nadine Menendez' sealed bid for sentencing delay past September 11: "On May 16 the Court wrote "there will be no further adjournments." (ECF Doc. No. 858.) On July 14 the defendant in a sealed letter request sought an additional adjournment of sentencing; the government opposed her request. IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that defendant's request for an adjournment of sentencing is denied. The sentencing shall take place on September 11 at 10:00 a.m. (Signed by Judge Sidney H. Stein on 7/15/2025)."

On July 18 Judge Stein responded to Coburn's motion to withdraw: "ORDER as to Nadine Menendez: The Court is in receipt of Barry Coburn' s motion for leave to withdraw as counsel on behalf of himself, Sarah Schwietz, Marc Eisenstein, and their law firm Coburn & Greenbaum PLLC, dated July 18, 2025. (ECF No. 878.) Local Criminal Rule 1.l(b) applies Local Civil Rule 1.4(b) to attorney withdrawals. Rule 1.4(b) provides in relevant part as follows: [A]n attorney who has appeared for a party may be relieved or displaced only by order of the court. All motions to withdraw must be served upon the client and (unless excused by the court) upon all other parties. Proof of such service upon the client shall be filed on the docket in each case where withdrawal is sought. Local Civil Rule l.4(b). Mr. Coburn is directed to file the required affidavit by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025. (Signed by Judge Sidney H. Stein on 7/18/2025."

On July 21 the US opposes Nadine Menendez' seal request for more delay; on the record they said it is partially based on a professor being in Spain.

On July 25, after three letters from Coburn including on IOLTA funds he said were raised by new counsel, Judge Stein let him out of the case.

On July 31 in a 51 page order Judge Stein denied Nadine Menendez' motions for acquittal or a new trial."

ICE Says Will Not Place Biological Male in Female Facility As Is Urged to In SDNY Habeas

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 26 –   There are a number of immigration-related habeas corpus proceedings pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York these days. But on August 26 SDNY Judge Valerie E. Caproni held a hearing on one that she called unique. Inner City Press was there to the end, from the thread:

OK - now ICE case of Vasquez Salgado v. Francis, Judge Caproni has docketed a question: "explain in detail why the Jackson Parish Correctional Facility is the only facility in the US appropriate for Petitioner's detention."

Judge: Did ICE surrender custody at the emergency room? US lawyer: Once she was transported from the ambulance to the other facility, ICE just walked away. There is no retainer in place but ICE has asked to be notified, to re-take custody

Petitioner's lawyer: ICE still has her phone and purse, all of her possessions. Judge: That doesn't mean she is in custody. Petitioner's lawyer: This hospital is not a long term facility. They are intending to release her back into ICE custody

Judge: So you think they will release after two weeks, when Medicaid stops paying - a week from today - Labor Day weekend. We're playing doctor here. You have no idea who well they are stabilizing her? Petitioner's lawyer: I've had 3 calls with her

Judge: The Government has told me the plaintiff is qualified by ICE as high risk. Why? US lawyer: Based on criminal history. She has a criminal history. Judge: She has several arrests, but she's not Sammy Gravano. There's no attempted murder or rape

Petitioner's lawyer: There is a Class E non-violent felony charged. Judge: So how does ICE classify here at high risk? US lawyer: Criminal possession of a weapons, obstruction of breathing - Judge: Woah. Slow down. US lawyer: Assault in the 2d degree, firearm

Judge: The Court wants ICE to make sure their classification as high risk is important. This defendant appears to have some psychiatric needs. US lawyer: ICE is no longer holding that bed space in Louisiana. So she'd have to be assessed again.

US lawyer: The only facility we can use in this District is the Orange County jail. Judge: What is ICE doing with detainees like this one with obvious psychiatric problems - I mean, she is involuntarily committed. US lawyer: Batavia in Buffalo was able to...

Judge: Gender affirming care. Gender dyshoria Petitioner's lawyer: She takes injections. Judge: I was told that Clinton County could not accommodate her medical needs - just a pill and an injection. How is that possible? US lawyer: Injections could be difficult

Judge: I got reports also about the MDC, Elizabeth, New Jersey and Moshannon [Inner City Press covered Rep Summer Lee's being blocked from there yesterday - thread will continue

AUSA Waterman: ICE will not place a biological male in a female prison.

AUSA Waterman: There is a facility in Florida that I believe can address these issues. On the other, Louisiana has more capabiliity, more bed. Orange County has only 80 bed, maybe now 115

Judge: Here's the thing. Right now the US has a bit of breathing room in this case - she has some health issues, and some gender affirming issues. The petitioner is making a motion for her to be released on bail. I understand, 26 Federal Plaza is not long term. Judge: You ought to come up with a better idea. If not, this will be a high priority for me once it's fully briefed on September 17. At 26 Federal Plaza is seems she had a psychological break

Judge: ICE needs to understand that every hill is not worth dying over. Petitioner's lawyer: It seems they want to put her in solitary. There are other options. Judge: If ICE had a bed in a woman's facility it might be different, release might be denied.
