For Hurricane Sandy Fraud Former NYPD Melnick Gets 3 Years Probation, Eyes Florida

SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 17 – Back on September 20, 2022 Federal prosecutors in Manhattan announced that Walter Melnick,

"a retired Inspector of the New York City Police Department and a disaster relief consultant, pled guilty to conspiring to commit federal program fraud in connection with his work for an Illinois-based consulting firm that provided Hurricane Sandy-related recovery services to the City of New York.  MELNICK surrendered today and pled guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge Valerie Figueredo in federal court in Manhattan. The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero." 

 On March 17, 2023 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Marrero held Melnick's sentencing. Inner City Press went and covered it.

   The sentencing guideline was 24 to 30 months. Melnick's lawyer submitted quotes and letters of support, and there were supporters in the courtroom.

 Judge Marrero while calling the crime serious and long-term sentencing Melnick to three years' probation, the first of which is to be home incarceration. 

  Defense counsel asked for permission to travel to Melnick's home in Florida. Judge Marrero said to ask Probation.
