UNGATE, Dec 21 – The UN's long failure on Syria was at the fore on December 21, with the Security Council hearing from UNSG Antonio Guterres' British relief chief Martin Griffiths pontificating while concealing his finances.
Griffiths said: "As we approach the end of 2022, I want to remind the Council of the very worrying trends we have witnessed in Syria this year... 2022 was also the year that saw cholera make a resurgence for the first time in 15 years, profiting from a health system under severe strain. Outbreaks of cholera usually occur in communities struggling to access safe water and where sanitation and public health infrastructure has been damaged due to conflict or natural disasters. Some 62,000 suspected cholera cases have been reported as of 18 December. One hundred people have sadly succumbed to the disease."
Of course, the UN itself killed 10,000 people in Haiti with cholera. But even the UN's weak public financial disclosure program, initiated under Ban Ki-moon, Griffiths does not comply with. He simply refuses to file. What kind of relief chief is this? Inner City Press remains banned from the UN, despite its appeal filed, as the UN said to, with DSS Gilles Michaud.
