After Shooting Woman Through Peephole in Douglass Houses at 17 Defendant Gets 15 Years

NYS COURTHOUSE, June 28 –   Antjuan Smith was convicted of shooting a woman through the peephole of her apartment in the Douglass Houses in Manhattan.

On June 28 he was up for sentencing. Inner City Press went to cover it (although its application to shoot video was denied, at the defense's request).

The Manhattan DA's office asked for 18 years, stating the victim can never again feel save (and has lost the use of the eye). The defense asked for much less, closer to the five year minimum.

The judge cited the viciousness of the shooting, and then those who put the defendant up to it didn't even bother to come to the trial to support him. She imposed an 18 year sentence. The defense said it is appealing.

Later: Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the sentencing ... As a result of the shooting, the woman has permanently lost sight in her eye.   Assistant D.A. Andrew Mercer of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit handled the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Christopher Prevost (Chief of the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit) and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Investigative Analysts Jonathan Diver and Cristina Valianatos assisted on the case.  D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, in particular the 24th Precinct. Detectives Isaac Moultry, Robert Maxcy and Liridon Ahmedi investigated the case under the supervision of Sergeants Isaias Martinez and Michael Nesto, Captain James Dennedy, Deputy Chief Brain McGee and Inspector Naoki Yaguchi.
