SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 13 – As Mahmoud Khalil was sent to the ICE detention facility in Elizabeth, NJ - and then it seems to Louisiana - his lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. It was not viewable on PACER but it was, at terminals in the courthouse itself. On Bluesky here, Threads here (later, on X)

On March 10 it was assigned to Judge Jesse M. Furman who ordered: "a joint letter, no later than March 11, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., indicating whether the conference is necessary and addressing how the Court should handle the present Petition."

The letter was filed just before 7 pm, noting the US Attorney's Office's assertion is disputes on jurisdiction and possibility transferring the case, but still asking for the conference on March 12.

Inner City Press live tweeted March 12 - the Assistant US Attorney said Khalil was moved to New Jersey before the 4 am filing of the habeas petition. Judge Furman asked for briefing and ordered privileged phone calls March 12 and 13, thread here

On March 13 respondent Joyce amended his declaration to say HSI "observed Khalil outside of 195 Claremont Avenue in Manhattan, New York at approximately 8:32 p.m. and arrested Khalil in the front foyer of 195 Claremont Avenue at approximately 8:35 p.m., for the purpose of placing him in removal proceeding," filing on Patreon here

The case is M.K. v. Joyce, et al., 1:25-cv-1935 (Furman)
