SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 11 – As Mahmoud Khalil was sent to the ICE detention facility in Elizabeth, NJ - and then it seems to Louisiana - his lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. It was not viewable on PACER but it was, at terminals in the courthouse itself. On Bluesky here, Threads here (later, on X)
On March 10 it was assigned to Judge Jesse M. Furman who ordered: "a joint letter, no later than March 11, 2025, at 5:00 p.m., indicating whether the conference is necessary and addressing how the Court should handle the present Petition."
The letter was filed just before 7 pm, noting the US Attorney's Office's assertion is disputes on jurisdiction and possibility transferring the case, but still asking for the conference on March 12 on these issues. Letter on X Threads BlueSky
The case is M.K. v. Joyce, et al., 1:25-cv-1935 (Furman)
