UN GATE, March 14 – How corrupt is today's UN under Antonio Guterres? Today's follow up is yet again on his mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, about which his spokespeople Stephane Dujarric and Melissa Fleming refuse all Press questions. Inner City Press has asked them, and others, about the newest sex abuse case against the UN there. Now this, from a UN whistleblower sent to Inner City Press:
Dear Mr. Matthew Russell Lee:
The recent statement by the Government of South Sudan calling for UNMISS to evacuate its compound near Juba Airport is deeply concerning - it is said the UN lied and kept Radio Mireya after independence, and now acts as a ugly guest.
Now UNMISS Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) Nicholas Haysom is reportedly lobbying UN headquarters in New York to extend his contract beyond April. Despite publicly stating that he wants to leave the UN, sources indicate that Haysom is privately pushing for an extension, citing personal reasons, including his recent marriage, young children, and medical concerns.
Meanwhile, concerns are mounting over the UN's approach to leadership appointments. Critics argue that the organization should prioritize qualified candidates rather than extending contracts for those who may no longer be fit for duty.
The debate intensifies as UNMISS Chief of Staff Leda Limann has recently been rostered for a Deputy SRSG (DSRSG) position from P3,P-4,P-5,D1 and D2 from the same office, and the former Nigerian Chief of Staff is expected to be appointed as the next SRSG with backing from Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed. Observers are calling for urgent UN reforms to eliminate favoritism and politically driven recruitment, emphasizing the need for a transparent and merit-based selection process.
Guterres, they say, should resign or lose immunity - and end censorship. His spokespeople have refused to any all of these questions. Watch this site.
