SDNY COURTHOUSE, Oct 13, Exclusive – A man served 25 years in New York State prison under another man's name. On October 13, he was arrested and detained again, for now, for using the other's man.
On October 13 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn held a proceeding. Inner City Press alone covered it.
An elderly looking man in a maroon hooded sweatshirt was brought out by the U.S. Marshals.
The Assistant US Attorney said he had been falsely using the name Calvin Johnson for forty years, and is wanted in the Middle District of Florida.
Judge Netburn asked, But how is he supposed to get there? Without identification?
The Federal Defender pointed out the 25 year sentence and that he was taken off lifetime parole. She said it was unlikely that her client could find anyone to co-sign a bond.
After taking a break with Pre-Trial Services, Judge Netburn returned and set condition to be met before release: a home visit by Pre-Trial Services, GPS moitoring, and a $25,000 bond with one financially responsible person co-signing it within two weeks.
Inner City Press will continue to follow the case.
While not yet appearing in PACER, even after the proceeding, the case was said to be US v. Johnson, 21-mj-9771 (Netburn).
