SDNY MAG COURT, August 20 – In the Magistrates Court of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on August 20, a defendant was presented after being detained on a warrant from the District of Columbia.
The DC case is for "unauthorized operation of a vehicle" - driving a friend's rental car after it was due to be turned in. The detainee Kambiz Ilkhani had been processed through SDNY before on it. That time, he did not seek release, thinking the U.S. Marshals would transport him to DC.
They did - but it took eight weeks, via Oklahoma, in a process some call diesel therapy.
And since it clearly costs the taxpayers more, is there some contractor involved?
This time, his Federal Defender first won his release on $10,000 bond co-signed by one financial responsible person. Then he asked to be out with a GPS bracelet to try to find the suretor. But there were no more GPS bracelets this day.
Ilkhani, speaking for himself, offered to go directly to DC and get a GPS bracelet from Pre-Trial Services there. Judge Cave said, Don't go to DC right now.
It appears he'll be released Monday or Tuesday when a bracelet is available, and will be given two and not just one week to find the suretor, or ask that the condition be waived.
