Huawei Trial Opening Statements after Juror Delay Feature RICO Charge and Founder Tale

EDNY COURTHOUSE, Sept 9 –   With the USA v. Huawei trial now underway in Federal court in Brooklyn, presiding Judge Ann Donnelly on September 8 instructed prospective jurors: "China and the Communist Party … are not on trial."

The same was said, or claimed, in the Southern District of New York in the UN corruption trials of CCP-member Ng Lap Seng, and CCP-NGO boss Patrick Ho of the China Energy Fund Committee. Both were convicted. But is Huawei different?

On September 9 Inner City Press put out a 20 tweet thread of the opening arguments, on X and Bluesky.

Later this month Xi Jinping travels from Beijing to Washington. Some wonder if the Huawei trial, like that of Eric Adams, could not begin a bargaining chip or, said otherwise post-World Cup, political football.

But for now, with Huawei represented by three large law firms, it goes forward. Surprisingly to some, the jury was selected on September 8, with opening statements set for September 9.  Still outstanding in the docket, at least that part of it not sealed, is this joint question:

"Whether the government’s first witness may testify that (a) Huawei’s customer(s) in Iran were indirectly owned by the 'Supreme Leader' of Iran, or other government officials, or (b) Zaeim is the 'Ministry of Intelligence' of Iran."

Perhaps it is the Iran angle that would keep the Huawei case from being traded away. Or perhaps not even that.

Inner City Press was in the EDNY courthouse, which prohibits press cell phones or laptops in courtrooms, on August 24, trying to get another 2018 criminal case at least docketed: Sealed v. Sealed, 18-cr-277.  Judge William F. Kuntz II in a 13-page order ruled that it must stay sealed. Is it related in some way to Huawei?
