100 CENTRE STREET, Aug 20 – A man charged with attempted murder as a hate crime while in the Attica prison pleaded guilty to assault in the first degree, reference to hate crime gone.
On August 20, he was up for sentencing in 100 Centre Street before Justice Cori H. Weston. Inner City Press was there.
"I apologize to the victim," he said. "It was an accident."
"What do you mean?" Justice Weston challenged him.
"I confused him for someone else," the defendant said. "I was being targeted by gangs. The state allowed this to happen."
Justice Weston agreed to suggest protective custody, as she imposed the agreed 15-year sentence on him.
The case is People v. Khalif. He is 35 years old.
