Afrisiabi was illegal paid as a lobbyist by Iran Mission the UN for years, through the UN Federal Credit Union.

Now he is one of the five released / traded by the US Administration, along with unfreezing $6 billion, for Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz, and two other U.S. citizens. And Guterres was set to meet / celebrate with Raisi hours later.

On September 19 it was confirmed - Iran had traded for Afrasiabi, who claimed he was against them and didn't work for them: "MOTION to Dismiss by USA as to Kaveh Lotfolah Afrasiabi. ( Executive Grant of Clemency)  ORDER granting [221]. The Government's motion to dismiss the indictment without prejudice is granted. The parties' [220, 221] motions to exonerate defendant's bond and terminate pretrial supervision are also granted. The Government's motion to seal [219] is denied as moot. All other open motions terminated as moot. The Clerk is directed to mark this case terminated."
