SDNY MAG COURT EXCLUSIVE, June 17 -  In the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on June 17, a detention or release proceeding was held by Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis on a defendant charged with selling fentanyl disguises as oxy, 4.5 kilos of it.

The Assistant US Attorney argued for detention of Richard Stuart, noting his five convictions for failing to register as a sex offender.

But his Federal Defender said he has a solid place to live in Landers, California, on land he is buying on installment, in an RV half buried in sand.

Mid-proceeding his girlfriend Margaret Janes showed up in the Magistrates Court, where only Inner City Press was in the gallery. It live tweeted, here.

The Federal Defender said she had left their car down on St. James with their dogs in it - and the windows rolled down.

Judge Willis said there were conditions for release, on $30,000 unsecured bond. In California Stuart will not be able to go near airports - except the Johnson Valley Airport where he buys his water from a well.

Since he was found eligible for appointed counsel, Judge Willis said the US could pay to fly him. But he and Margaret will drive, over the next week, calling in each day.

The case is US v. Stuart, 22-mj-5092 (Willis)
