Drone Focus of NYPD Amid Knicks Run and World Cup as US Attorney Talks Detention Bids for Guns

ONE POLICE PLAZA, NYC, May 21 – There was a drone-heavy press conference on May 21 in One Police Plaza by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch and Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI New York Field Office James Barnacle "to brief the media on recent cases."

Inner City Press was there and live tweeted:

Commish Tisch: I want to thank Jay Clayton... The extremist who moves to real-world danger, those cases demand more than one office. The World Cup and 250th Anniversary of our country is coming. We partner, as we'll discuss

Commish Tisch: NYPD does the work on the ground, SDNY prosecutes on Federal charges. We have acting on guns from South Carolina. I began my career building out the NYPD's counter-terrorism work. Just last week, the defendant brought in from Iraq...  For drone mitigation, we've bought $6.5 million of equipment and will work with SDNY, we won't say how. The Safer Skies Act creates a pathway.

US Attorney Jay Clayton: NYC is popular, it embodies the best of America. But our successes make us a target. There are nation-states and organizations dedicated to targeting us. Threat levels are high, but violent crime is down, largely due to NYPD

US Attorney Clayton: The IRGC, ISIS, Hamas, the drug cartels and others are all committed to attacking our society. Let me make it clear: if you plan to attack, you will be caught and be subject to the full weight of Federal prosecution.

US Attorney Clayton: Look at Washington Square Park drug dealing. With NYPD, we shut it down. If you use a gun in a crime, we want you off the streets. Our office has sought detention of 223 gun defendants

[How many were and are in fact detained?]

US Attorney Clayton: You can call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

FBI NY Field Office James Barnacle: Every time I speak with Commissioner Tisch she asks about drones. We are the only ones who could have brought al-Saadi back from Iraq.  FBI's Barnacle (looking down at lectern) I'm going to skip over some things... We arrested a man wanted for rape in El Salvador. Thank you.

M.C. On topic only

Q&A Q1: Knick crowds? Commish Tisch: Depends if watch party for away game, hope for run to the NBA Finals  etc

Presser ends - Inner City Press raised hand for question about detention rate in SDNY Mag Court, but time ran out.

Only this week, a defendant charged with using a straw man to buy guns in Pennsylvania and shipping them to the Dominican Republic was released on bond in the SDNY Mag court, as exclusively covered by Inner City Press. No appeal to Part 1 was taken. So what is the batting average, not only in 100 Centre Street but also 500 Pearl?
