UNITED NATIONS, December 2 -- A UN Security Council trip to Libya and Egypt was discussed in closed door Council consultations on Friday, sources tell Inner City Press. UK Permanent Representative Mark Lyall Grant led the discussion.
That the Council would visit Libya, the bombing of which by NATO is authorized in Resolution 1973, is understandable. But the Council did nothing about Egypt. Why go there? For what purpose?
Inner City Press asked Brazil's Permanent Representative Viotti and she said the purpose would be to meet with the Arab League.
China's Permanent Representative Li Baodong told Inner City Press that no decision on the trip should be made until the new members come in, in January.
And proponents of the trip seem to agree. They are also discussion West Africa, or a short jaunt to Haiti. We'll see.
