UNITED NATIONS, June 8 -- In the Congo, the UN's replacement for embattled envoy Alan Doss is former UN Ambassador Roger Meece, well placed Security Council sources told Inner City Press on June 8. Inner City Press asked Gerard Araud, Ambassador of France which had two candidates for the post, "What about Roger Meece?"

"Congratulations to him," Araud said, entering the Council for a closed session on Iran.

"I don't see any particular problem with him" and his nomination, UK Ambassador Lyall Grant told Inner City Press.

Doss, a UK citizen, had said he would leave on May 31, but has remained in place. Meanwhile questions about Doss' use of funds and UN resources for family members remain unanswered.

Twice, the UN has declined to comment on the status of the Office of Internal Oversight Services report condemning Doss, now in front of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The non - selected French candidates included Jean Maurice Ripert, currently attaining dubious achievement as a UN envoy to Pakistan, and Jean Marie Guehenno, former head of UN peacekeeping. Who would want to oversee the dismantling of the UN's Congo mission?
