UN Day Laborers Abandoned in Myanmar by WFP As Junta Bombs Guterres Spox No Answer

by Matthew Russell Lee, Patreon Book Substack

UN GATE, Dec 5 – The cynicism of the United Nations under Antonio Guterres is on display, and now uncovered, in Myanmar.

Amid shelling of Loikan, the capital of Karen State, the UN World Food Program pulled out -- but left behind its local day laborers, who it had been paying $12 a day, to fend for themselves.

Then when asked, neither WFP nor Antonio Guterres' resident "humanitarian" coordinator much less Spokespeople Stephane Dujarric and Melissa Fleming, no answers from any of them.

Just more appeals of funds, more virtue signaling, more censorship of the Press that asks (and Inner City Press will be asking them, in writing, about this). This is Myanmar Now:

"Hi Matthew. Given your longtime commitment to UN accountability, I wanted to share with you: WFP in Myanmar was found to have recently left its paid local "volunteers" behind when it evacuated the town of Loikaw, which has been subjected to indiscriminate artillery fire and air strikes by the Myanmar military in recent weeks. These were around 60 people who had been paid a daily rate to distribute rice for the agency-- our source pointed out that he had worked with WFP in this capacity regularly for nearly a year, but he was not included in the UN agencies' exit, and had to flee on his own to save his life. WFP would not comment directly on the allegation that they had abandoned people like him."
