SDNY COURTHOUSE, August 17 – Matthew Norton and eight others were charged with honest services fraud in connection with Local 638 of the Enterprise Association of Steamfitters.

On June 17, 2021 U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Colleen McMahon held a proceeding.

Inner City Press covered it.     It took some time to make sure all of the defendants and their lawyers were present.

Then Judge McMahon set a schedule: discovery from the government due in 30 days, defendants have 90 days to review it.

Jump cut to August 17, 2022. Inner City Press was covering the SDNY Magistrates Court, as the only media there, when Norton and his defense counsel can in to plead guilty before Magistrate Judge Barbara C. Moses.

They had to wait, for an appointment of counsel for what appeared from context and hand tattoo to be cooperator in an unrelated gang case. Then, the plea. It was routine until, during the allocution, Norton's voice broke and he seemed to cry.

The amount taken in bribes was not stated, nor is it in the superseding information of Scott Roche, who recently also pled guilty in the case.

Norton faced a maximum of five years, but got a plea agreement for 8 to 14 months - no appeal if 14 months or less, venue waived. His sentencing will be on November 16, time not stated in the proceeding.

The case is USA v. Cahill et al, 20-cr-521 (McMahon)
