UN GATE, Nov 9 – How corrupt is today's UN under Antonio Guterres? Today's follow up is on his mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, about which his spokespeople Stephane Dujarric and Melissa Fleming refuse all Press questions. Inner City Press has asked them, and others, about the newest sex abuse case against the UN there. Now this, from a UN whistleblower sent to Inner City Press:
Dear Mr. Matthew Russell Lee:
...Victoria Browning, director of the UN mission in South Sudan, allegedly instructed Chief Rabi Burathoki to block emails from whistleblowers exposing corruption and illicit activities within the UNMISS compound. According to staff sources, this coordinated group acts with impunity, committing actions against staff members while reportedly accessing their emails without their knowledge, recording their conversations, and taking photos without consent—actions staff describe as unacceptable and criminal within the UN.
This alleged surveillance, they claim, aims to intimidate staff and deter them from disclosing illegal activities. Staff members suggest that the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) fails to perform its role effectively, citing conflicts of interest and claims of the office as an instrument for retaliation. Allegedly, some personnel within OIOS have compromised their professional standards by fostering close relationships with senior staff, which staff claim influences their actions, compromises standard operating procedures, and undermines transparency.
It is Guterres, they say, who should resign - and end censorship. Watch this site.
