SDNY COURTHOUSE, Jan 3 – Jason Ruben is an African American man who applied as a probationary firefighter in the FDNY Fire Academy but was dismissed, and has now sued for discrimination.

On January 3, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York  Judge Paul A. Engelmayer held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Judge Engelmayer asked how this case relates to a wider FDNY discrimination case in the Eastern District and was told, this is only about probationary firefighters.

He noted that his time on the bench has overlapped a few mayors and that perhaps the new NYC Corporation Counsel should be made aware of this case alleging systemic discrimination.

After offering to refer the case at any time to a Magistrate Judge, he set the next conference for July 19 at 2 pm and said he hoped that would be in person.

The case is Ruben v. City of New York, 21-cv-5047 (Engelmayer)
