SDNY COURTROOM EXCLUSIVE, May 24 – Urologist Darius Paduch was arrested and arraigned on April 11, 2023. Inner City Press was there.
U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Sarah L. Cave held Paduch's arraignment.
Though Paduch had filled out the affidavit to get a publicly paid lawyer, the CJA on duty David Stern said he was for now only representing him for the presentment, and possibly to put together co-signers for a bail package. He consented to detention.
Paduch was in a t-shirt, with left arm tattoos and boots untied, now without laces. Stern said there are many medical issues.
The bail application, Stern said, may be Monday. Judge Cave notes that she will no longer be presiding in the Mag Court then. But Inner City Press will be there.

The prosecutors said: From at least in or about 2015 through at least in or about 2019, PADUCH, while working as a urologist, enticed and induced multiple victims to travel to his medical offices at Medical Institution-1, so PADUCH could, among other things, sexually abuse the victims. In or about 2019, PADUCH began practicing at a different hospital located in Long Island, New York (“Medical Institution-2”), where he continued to sexually abuse patients."
On April 19 Paduch's counsel submitted a letter to Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis for release on bail, attaching his TIAA retirement ($1,500,000) Citibank home equity ($400,000) and name of his life partner and proposed co-signer, Robert Lischer. "The couple is also parenting a nine year old son they adopted together in 2020."
Another proposed co-signer: Jordan Roosma; "he met Dr. Paduch as a patient at 13 years old." Also, Paduch's cousin Jadwiga Wojcik, employed at Greene, Tweed & Company.
But he was denied: "Minute Entry for proceedings held before Magistrate Judge Jennifer E Willis: Detention Hearing as to Darius A Paduch held on 4/20/2023. Defendant present with CJA counsel Robert Soloway. AUSA Marguerite Colson present for the Government. BAIL DISPOSITION: DETENTION; RISK OF FLIGHT/DANGER. *COMMENTS: As explained more fully in the transcript, Dr. Paduch was detained on dangerousness only. The robust package he proposed tying up a significant portion of his assets and co-signs by husband, cousin and former patient allayed concerns about about flight. However, the nature and circumstances of the charge and the weight of the evidence create significant concern about the safety of the community. Dr. Paduch is alleged to have sexually assaulted over ten alleged victims, many who were under 18 and is alleged to have used phone and internet to arrange to meet some of these alleged victims at locations other than his office."
On May 9, Paduch's counsel wrote to Judge Ronnie Abrams asked to push a May 10 conference to May 24 to also address "the bail motion to be filed."
On May 16, Paduch's counsel filed the motion, stating that Paduch "has a loving husband, Robert Lischer, and a son, William. He currently resides in North Bergen, New Jersey... a very different defendant than Jeffrey Epstein."
On May 24, the bail hearing. Inner City Press was there, thread here:
OK- now at bail hearing on detained urologist Darius Paduch, charged with sexual abuse
Defense: This case is going to involve names of and info about minors that he can't have in the MDC. [Paduch has three retained lawyers here] Judge: How can he review this discovery in the MDC? AUSA: On computer in a designated area. Or an inmate specific laptop
Defense: We don't know much about the victims. This could be consensual. Judge: The brief has him texting to ask for photos - Defense: But are they minors?
Defense: My client traveled to China and Qatar - they are not very helpful to gay men like him who have adopted a child.
Defense: If he screws up, he goes back in. Judge: You say that like it's minor. But if he screws up, most likely he hurts a minor. Defense: Let's call it a possibility of a transgression. You want a waiver of extradition from Poland? No problem.
After a break, as AUSA describes Paduch's sticky abuses, Paduch sitting between his lawyers shakes his head. AUSA reads victims' letter, describing what Paduch did to them, sans gloves.
Now Paduch's lawyer asks to strike the victims' statements.
Judge: I don't think I need to rely on them. I am denying release - as danger AND risk of flight.
Inner City Press will be staying on the case(s).
The case is US v. Paduch, 23-cr-181 (Abrams / Cave)
