SDNY COURTHOUSE, March 16 – Steven Woo was charged in a money laundering conspiracy in 2019. Now there are questions about his competency, and if his prosecution should continue.
On March 2, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Sidney H. Stein held a proceeding. Inner City Press went and covered it.
Woo's lawyer Eric R. Breslin of Duane Morris was advocating for mental capacity testimony by Zoom. He said Woo is 74 years old now and lives in a garage, basically a "pauper."
He said the government must have some reason for proceeding against Woo, but he can't discern why. Judge Stein asked for an answer.
The Assistant US Attorney said Woo had picked up the cash, but seemed to say that some re-consideration may be taking place.
Judge Stein ordered the defense to submit a request for an alternative resolution, and scheduled a status conference for April 12 at 11 am.
On March 16, Woo's co-defendant Dielong Wu pled guilty in the case, before Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker. Inner City Press was there. The US Attorney's Office's plea agreement was for a guideline sentence of 57 to 71 months; it was said if all other co-defendants plead guilty it would be reduced to 51 to 63 months. And if co-defendant Woo, rather than pleading, gets the mulled alternative resolution?
