Artnet Sues for Failed Auction Sale of Banksy to Bidder Who Pleads Manic Psychosis in SDNY

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Aug 31 – Artnet sold a Banksy in an online auction in September 2022, to bidder Ferrial Hussein Lanton of Washingon DC.

Then Lanton didn't pay. Artnet sued.

On August 31, 2023, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Magistrate Judge Jennifer E. Willis held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Lanton, representing himself, said that the defendant - that is, he - suffers from manic psychosis and therefore did not have the capacity to contract.

He also chided Artnet for not joining necessary parties: the sellers. Also at issue in the aborted bid are works by Frank Stella, Steve McCurry and Shepard Fairey.

When asked why he missed the deadline to respond to Artnet's amended complaint, Lanton said "I've been out." A schedule was set.

The case is Artnet Worldwide Corp, Inc. v. Lanton, 23-cv-1948 (Engelmayer / Willis)
