COURTHOUSE,
June 11 รข In late 2023
Niranjan Mittal, a
Brooklyn-based cardiologist,
was indicted in connection
with a scheme to fabricate
patient records, pay
physicians for patient
referrals, and bill for
medically unnecessary vascular
procedures. On February
10, 2025 he had a conference
before U.S. District Court for
the Southern District of New
York Judge Ronnie Abrams.
Inner City Press was there: This was listed
as a status conference, but
Inner City Press heard more.
And yes, he is pleading guilty
to Count 4. Four prosecutors
here, two agents - and Inner
City Press.
Mittal says he is 72 years
old. US Attorney's
Office's plea agreement has
guideline of 30 to 37 months -
no appeal if he gets 37 months
or below. On August 14 the
US Attorney's Office asked for
an above-Guidelines sentence
of at least 60 months'
imprisonment. On August 21,
Inner City Press went to the
sentencing. There were
patients filling the pews,
whom the defense said were
happy with their treatment.
One woman with a walker shook
her head. Mittal was sentenced
to 37 months, with forfeiture
to be referred to a Magistrate
Judge. Jump cut to June
11, 2026 with Mittal's lawyer
wrote in to contest the US
Attorney's Office's request
for $39 million of forfeiture,
saying the basis wasn't
proven. The case is USA v. Mittal, 1:23-cr-648 (Abrams)
