COURTHOUSE,
April 30 รข Amath Sow, who was
selling tourist bus tickets in
Times Square in November 2023
when he says he was jumped by
a group of teens, is on trial
for assault in the second
degree. He stabbed
a 15-year-old, after being run
into by a scooter and punched
and kicked in the face. On
April 30, NYPD Officer Tariq
narrated his body-cam video
footage of the aftermath,
including the stabbed teenager
bleeding on the ground. Inner
City Press was there: Sow's lawyer: You
didn't see the fight, right? Tariq: I did not.
Defense: No further questions.
ADA: No re-direct [The jury
left until Monday] Justice
Thompson: Mr. Sow, it is your
decision whether you testify.
Ultimately it is your
decision. I will send the
parties a draft of charges,
with every count on the
indictment [In WebCrims as
"Aslt W/int Caus Ser Inj
W/weap, Cause Ph Inj W/weap
Aslt:w/int Caus
Disfig/dismemb"] ADA: A woman in a
distinctive top took a
photograph, that the officers
blasted out - that's what led
to him being arrested on 45th
Street. I don't know if the
defense is objecting... Defense: I
am objecting. There's no issue
if Mr. Sow stabbed him... So
how is that consciousness of
guilt? ADA: He is
walking away from the crime
scene - he disposed of the
sharp object. Where did he do
that? Defense:
I'll have to see it, and focus
on it. I'll make
objections. Justice:
Have it ready to go on
Monday. ADA: There was
no big investigation - because
he surrendered himself. That's
why we're here. Justice Thompson:
Can we circle back to the
scissors? ADA: They can
credit Officer Tariq.
Defense: I didn't realize. ADA: You've been
nothing but
courteous. So too,
three stories down, was
Justice Melissa T. Lewis.
Presiding over a crack sale
trial, she apologized to the
jurors for her courtroom which
is hot and has a broken clock.
[Inner City Press previously
covered Justice Lewis in Tap B
in 100 Centre Street with a
video of a Yule log on a
computer screen.] Here in 111 Centre Street, the jurors filed out ducking around the big screen TV, and were later seen in the hall, with its view of the Family Court. Coverage will continue.
