Murder at Age 17 Results in 300 Month Prison Sentence 13 Years Later for Jamal Adamson

SDNY COURTHOUSE, Feb 28 – Charged with the 20 June 2010 murder of David Moore on 122nd Street in  East Harlem, Jamal Anderson & Hasahn Murray (who were 17 and 16 at the time) on April 24 argued that the charges are unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Gregory H. Woods made short work of the argument, then read a long, seemingly pre-prepared decision denying the motion to dismiss. Inner City Press covered and answered questions online about it.

When Murray's lawyer asked for time to brief a question that had come up, Judge Woods says no, that it is "shocking" that these arguments weren't ready.

In the case, Assistant US Attorneys Jacob Warren and Maurene Comey have argued that because the two men are charged with a crime punishable by death, there is no statute of limitation, citing the Second Circuit's decision in US v. Payne, 591 F.3d 46 (2d Cir. 2020).

Judge Woods agreed.

Jump cut to February 28, 2023 - after pleading guilty, Adamson was up for sentencing by Judge Woods. Inner City Press was in the courtroom. Judge Woods imposed a sentence of 240 months on count 1, 60 months on count 2, consecutive.

Afterward as the proceeding petered out Adamson appeared to want to speak, but his lawyer counseled him against it. Anything left to lose? No recommendation for designation to a particularly prison or area was made.

The case is US v. Adamson, 19-cr-702 (Woods).
