SDNY COURTHOUSE, Jan 7 – Giannis Antetokounmpo, perhaps the NBA's most litigious player, has sued Jordan Zangrillo for trademark violation.
On January 7, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Edgardo Ramos held a show cause hearing. Inner City Press covered it.
Judge Ramos was prepared to enter a default judgment against Zangrillo, but he showed up. Zangrillo explained that during the pandemic he made a drawing, put it on Instagram then tried to sell it over RedBubble.com.
His drawing didn't even say "Greek Freak" - it has, "Buck Nasty." It showed the back of Antetokounmpo's head with antlers on it.
He never made any money, and took it all down when he got Antetokounmpo's legal letter.
But still Antetokounmpo sued him for $2000.
On January 7 Antetokounmpo's lawyer said it was not about the money, that images of Antetokounmpo's two children had been sold in the past and now he has "no sense of humor" about it.
Judge Ramos told Zangrillo to file an answer by January 28, then got off the line. His courtroom deputy stayed on to explain NYLAG, then left.
Antetokounmpo's lawyer told Zangrillo to consider paying and agreeing to a permanent injunction. Buck Nasty indeed.
