SDNY COURTHOUSE, June 7 – The Dominican Republic’s former Consul General to Jamaica, Jeremias Jimenez Cruz , was indicted in 2019 for conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, and money laundering in connection therewith.

Richard Dennis Simon became his lawyer. But now Simon says he is near death.

On June 7, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Kimba M. Wood held a proceeding. Inner City Press covered it.

Simon spoke moving about his condition, and his long career in global law, often he said with up to 100 other lawyers.

Cruz said he'd like him to continue on, but Judge Wood reminded him of what Simon had just said. She praised Simon and allowed him out of the case. She put it in perspective, saying it was a blessing to be able to count one's blessings.

Mariel Colon will fill in for now, while Cruz' family decides how to proceed, retaining counsel.

The next date in July 12 at 9 am. The case is US v. Cruz, 19-cr-326 (Wood)
