Inner City Press Asks UN Of Claimed “Handing Over” Machar to DRC at DRC's Request
By Matthew Russell Lee
UNITED NATIONS, August 19 -- On July 11, 13 and 14, Inner City Press asked the UN about its lack of response to rapes and killing in the Terrain Apartments in Juba, South Sudan, having been contacted by sources there shocked at the lack of response by the UNMISS mission and others.Video here, including the UN on August 15 claiming after a month to STILL be investigating its negligence.
Past 9 pm on August 16, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement that he “has decided to launch an independent special investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding these incidents and to evaluate the Mission’s overall response.” This is a scam - Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarric back on July 14 answered Inner City Press' third day of questions about Terrain by saying the UN was already then investigating itself. This is a cover up.
On August 19, Inner City Press asked the UN about its version of “handing over” Riek Machar to the DR Congo government at the request of the DRC. Vine here; UN transcript here:
Inner City Press: There is a story that the Secretary-General personally approved this exfiltration in a call on 16 August. I'd like you to confirm or deny it.
Deputy Spokesman: I would do neither. What I will say is that we had a request in from the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and we did comply with that. And, of course, as you're aware, the UN performed it, which means, of course, that the officials here at headquarters were informed and went along with that.
ICP Question: Right. The story says that Machar, believing that there's a contract on him by mercenaries hired by Kiir, called MONUSCO, and MONUSCO contacted the Secretary-General. Doesn't describe any… maybe MONUSCO called. Then who originated the request? Was it MONUSCO having been contacted by Machar or the Government of the DRC?
Deputy Spokesman: Well, as I explained yesterday, we were responding to a request by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
